The Tracer, our quarterly journal, has 32 pages of information about Hamilton County genealogical records, repositories and resources. For a list of research assistance articles, see RESEARCH AIDS. 

The Tracer is the 2007 winner of the National Genealogical Society's Newsletter Competition in the category of County or Local Genealogical or Historical Society. The criteria are material interest, variety and originality, writing and editing quality, readability and attractiveness, and overall publication makeup.

The Tracer is indexed in the Periodical Source Index (PERSI), Genealogical Periodical Annual Index and the Ohio Genealogical Periodical Index: A County Guide. PERSI is a valuable resource, but it does not index every surname. HCGS prepares an annual index and sends it to members and subscribers. Our index contains all Surnames that were published in a genealogical context. See RESEARCH AIDS for a cumulative index covering the 1979-2005 issues.

The Society encourages members and non-members to submit material for publication, while reserving the right to accept or reject any material submitted. The Society does not assume any responsibility for errors of fact that come to its attention. Advertising is not accepted. 

In the past, Queries were published only in The Tracer. Now queries may be published either in The Tracer or on our website. This can be done without charge for HCGS members. For non-members, a fee of $3.00 per query is charged. All queries must show a connection to Hamilton County or the surrounding area in southwestern Ohio. The Gazette, our quarterly newsletter, contains news about HCGS and current events in the field of genealogy. Issues of The Gazette are on our website, available to the public for free.

Cincinnati area researchers now have a searchable resource for family and local history data. Thirty years of The Tracer (over 110 issues!) are available on 2 CDs or 1 DVD. Since the first issue in 1979, members of HCGS have gathered unpublished or difficult to access local genealogical information to put in The Tracer. Also included is every issue of The Gazette published through 2008, every annual surname index and an index for every significant article for 1979-2008. The issues are produced in PDF format which requires Adobe Reader, a free software program.

Topics include: African-American resources, Church baptism and birth records, books acquired by PLCH 1982-2008, cemetery deeds at Recorder's office, church histories, township, Reading and various church death records, Deutsche Pionier Verein, 1868-1950 member list and birthplaces, Germany emigration records, church, newspaper and probate court marriage records, Cincinnati Pioneer Assoc. 1885 membership list, courthouse research guides, Hamilton county community histories, and many more.

From 1977 to 1985, HCGS published abstracts to the earliest surviving probate records. It was decided to reissue these abstracts in PDF format on CD so that every name could be searchable. Now available for $11.
